cute, but poor quality Jan 15, 2007
By km The puzzle is a cute idea, but the paper pictures wrapped around each cube is poorly adhered. The paper often hangs over the sides and/or is not glued to the cube, so the paper is easily torn off. I have had to glue every piece of paper onto each of the cubes, and still my children find a loose piece that is too tempting not to tear. I wish the pictures were somehow stamped or painted on. I also wish the puzzle came with larger pictures of what the puzzles were going to look like once finished, so the children can better visualize what they are trying to make. I really like the idea, but I think the quality needs to be improved.

Awesome puzzle! Jan 06, 2007
By tuesdaymarie First of all, this puzzle was advertised as being intended for kids 3 and up. I cannot imagine a 3 year old being able to do this puzzle without parental help or a lot of frustration! My husband and I (who have put it together several times) enjoy watching other adults in the family try to figure it out!
That aside, it really is a great concept. The assembly tray is a bit fragile though - we received one in pretty shattered condition but after some wood glue and a bit of sanding with a nail file it looks like new again. (Note: Awesome customer service, too! When I reported that our tray had come in pieces, they sent a brand new puzzle right out even after I told them I could most likely fix it.)
The pieces are essentially wooden blocks covered with a sticker - which is a bit of a problem on one of our puzzles (we have two) because the sticker hangs over the edges of the blocks and catching it on your hands makes it peel back a bit. I've had to take tiny scissors and trim a few.
My almost 3 year old really loves helping me put the puzzle together - she's too little to figure out which side of the 6-sided cubes is the piece to a certain puzzle, so I find the right sides and she finds the animal's eyes, nose, feet, etc until the puzzle is together.
It's a great toy to grow into. And if you add the Farm Cube Puzzle, which we did, and mix up ALL the pieces it's even better when you're an older child (or adult!)

Not what I expect from Melissa and Doug Jan 15, 2009

Most Melissa and Doug products are great. Painted surfaces and durable. I bought this one expecting the same, but was very disappointed. The blocks have pictures on paper poorly glued on. I have had to cover every block in book tape to keep it from peeling.

Cheaply constructed, too difficult for toddlers Jul 13, 2009
By Orly While Melissa and Doug have a wide range of puzzles that are fun and educational, I am bothered by the fact that they market their puzzles as being made of real wood. In most cases this is misleading because the actual pieces of the puzzle in most cases are made of what seems to be some wood composite that is glued together with who knows what substances. This can be especially bothersome with younger children that may mouth the pieces. In some cases the puzzle pieces are only partially painted (to save money?) leaving the underlying composite revealed and in my experience also shedding.
Being a mom that prides herself on making safety and quality a top priority when purchasing toys for my child, I was especially disappointed with this product. It is a poor quality cheaply constructed toy. The blocks themselves are some king of composite which is covered with 6 different stickers that can be pealed off. The only part of the puzzle that is wood as far as I could tell is the wooden crate that houses the blocks.
As for the educational value of this toy, while it is a challenging puzzle with engaging pictures, it is a very difficult puzzle for toddlers to do on their own. We bought this for our 2 1/2 year old and while I admit that he enjoyed watching us put the puzzle together, the difficulty level is far to high for 2 year olds (and possibly for 3 year olds too). Since their are 16 blocks with 6 sides each with a different picture, their is a very wide range of possibilities and it can be very confusing and frustrating for a younger child and probably an older child as well. Adding to the difficulty is the fact that the completed pictures are shown in a very small format on the back of the the wooden crate that houses the blocks. So you need to either remember each picture perfectly or look at these small pictures in order to put the puzzle together.
I recently returned this puzzle and have purchased a wood block puzzle by Selecta. This is a high quality product made in Germany of all natural wood. They have 4 and 6 piece block puzzles making the difficulty level more appropriate for younger children.

By Mom of 2 My 2.5 year old loves this puzzle & plays w/ it everyday!!! Everyday we do a new puzzle & she loves completing it (w/ my help of course) & seeing the end picture. She likes finding all the same colour of borders & finding bits of the animal. VERY GOOD QUALITY!!! No peeling has ever occured w/ our puzzle.
