Terrible Disappointment -- parts don't fit Nov 30, 2008
By Katya My son (almost 8) and my husband (an engineer) sat down to put this together. Many of the holes were either drilled too small or, even worse, drilled in the WRONG PLACE. Some pieces are cut the wrong size and just don't fit!! What a terrible WASTE OF MONEY. There is no way to make it work without major drilling and sanding and then re-painting.
My son is so disappointed -- he was really looking forward to putting this together.

hard to assemble May 10, 2008
By S. Smolen I purchased this for my nephew and my father assembled it. He complained that the toy was difficult to put together due to screws not fitting well and predrilled holes not accurately cut. My nephew loves it and my sister likes the looks of it. He loves the moving parts! I would advise that you assemble it for the child before giving so they don't have to wait!

a MAJOR disappointment! May 24, 2008
By Kit I'm normally a big fan of Melissa and Doug products, but I can't believe I spent a single dollar on this toy. This is an assemble-it-yourself item, which is fine except...many of the holes did NOT match up (some were up to a HALF INCH off and looked as if a 3-year-old had drilled them). When I say drill, I mean that loosely, because some of the holes weren't even drilled all the way through. The showpiece of this toy is the fire truck ladder, but the ladder did NOT fit into the ladder holder...because the holes for the holder were drilled on the WRONG side of the truck! The only way to fix all the hole problems would be to take a power drill to it, but the wood is extremely soft, so you may end up shattering it. This is the worst quality control I've seen in a looooong time.

Not worth the cost Dec 06, 2009

"mother of two"
My son received this for his 5th birthday, along with the Melissa & Doug Mighty Builder Tow Truck. They were both difficult to assemble because half of the pre-drilled holes did not match up. Once I was finally able to assemble it, a piece to the ladder broke off, it was only glued on. I have re-glued that same piece three times now before finally giving up and throwing the piece away. My boys still play with the toy, but only the base truck. The ladder portion never worked right and now has two broken pieces. There are so many other fire truck toys out there, don't waste your time with this one.

Firetruck Apr 28, 2011
By Tim & Jennifer Differing from many reviews, I thought this was a great product. All of the screw holes that I had were aligned. Some of the screw holes were smaller, but I feel that was intended--holes for wood screws are typically drilled smaller so that the screw has something to grip. This was put together with a 3 year old and we had a blast. It took muscle, but he was able to drive the screws in. Now he has a fully assembled toy.
