Goog Idea but bad design Jan 14, 2008
By Johneric C. Emehel Numbers / Letters / Shapes by Melissa and David
These products are designed with a small light sensitive button under the number, letter or shape. Note that while I am only referring to the number game below that the same analysis applies to the letter (ABCs) and shape games. When you place the number in its appropriate slot (Example the # 2 in the number 2 slot) the game will say "two". The problem with the design is that it will also say two if your hand passes over the 2 slot while you are on your way to placing a 3 in the 3 slot. It will also say 2 if you cover the sensitivity button in the 2 slot with a 5, 6, 7, etc. I returned the numbers and letters game because the design problem of having the game calling out other numbers and calling out numbers other then the number my daughter has in her hand since that would tend to confuse her. I kept the shapes game even though it has the same design problem because since it is only 9 shapes (slots) vs. 20+ numbers or letters (slots) the problem is not as prevalent.

Great for teaching ABCs, but Buggy Jun 14, 2007
By HappyShopper I got this for my nephew to teach him his ABCs. He's learned his alphabet, and still plays with it several times a day. I'd give it 5 starts but unfortunately, it can make noise without being touched (I think you have to keep it on a flat surfact), and sometimes when you put the letters in it DOESN'T make the sound. Also, it does not have an on/off switch and you have to actually unscrew a plastic lid to remove the batteries (not included). Still, he loves it, so just keep it out of earshot at night.

Not what I had hoped Feb 22, 2010
By BeachMe This puzzle has a picture on the board that signifies each letter. When a letter is placed in its proper spot it says, "A is for apple" type of thing. I wish it just said A. No need to convolute what should be a just simple lesson. My children know what the picture is, they just need to learn their letters. I think they get bored and bothered by the unnecessary talk this puzzle makes. Otherwise this puzzle is good quality, which is why I did not give it a bad rating.

Exactly what we were looking for Apr 06, 2010
By E. Workman I was worried about buying this puzzle after reading other reviews, but we are very happy with the purchase. True, the puzzle is not a PERFECT tool for learning the alphabet, but it is still a good way to become familiar with the letters. Most of the concerns shared in other reviews are based on the fact that the puzzle spaces are light sensitive, but we really didn't find this to be a problem. For example, if a piece is missing, every time we turn the light on or off, the puzzle announces "G is for Guitar" (or whatever piece is missing). That was easily fixable, though, by covering the puzzle so that the light wouldn't hit it (until we found the missing piece). Another concern shared in other reviews is that the spaces are not letter specific. For example, if you try putting the G in the space for the A, the piece will not fit, but the puzzle still announces "A is for Apple" since the light sensor is covered. So, this may cause some confusion. However, I just work with my daughter while she does the puzzle. If she tries to put the G in the space for the A, the puzzle says "A is for Apple". I tell her, "Oh, it looks like that piece doesn't fit there, and the puzzle is telling us we're looking for the A." Overall, this is a fun learning tool & works just fine.
