 Good for spatial visualization Jul 02, 2008

You traverse an ever-shifting maze, collecting spell ingredients. Some ingredients are more valuable than others, especially if you have a secret recipe requiring specific ingredients. The maze is made up of regularly spaced fixed tiles, between which other tiles can be shifted. In fact you have to alter the maze, before moving your piece through the maze. You need to visualize what the maze will look like after you have modified it, so that you can move effectively.
I have a friend who doesn't have good spatial skills, but wants to improve them. She really likes this game, in part because she beat me several times. It's fun for gamers and non-gamers alike. Some people prefer the original game ("aMAZEing Labyrinth"), as the rules are less strict. When you teach others how to play, it's best to relax the rule about picking up the ingredients in order of value. The ingredient artwork is rather nice, and (unlike the original game) come on little circular counters rather than on the maze tiles.
You can play the game as a brain-burner (there is no luck apart from the initial layout and the irrational moves of other players). However, it's more fun if you settle for an event horizon of thinking one move beyond your current choice.

after playing the original, i thought that it would be more fun to get the master edition. turns out, altho it is still a fun game, the extra components may make the game drag on too long. the treasures are no longer a part of the board, but are on cardboard tokens which need to be placed on the board at the beginning of each phase. the idea is nice, but there isnt the same kind of feeling when you arent going for your own secret items in your hand like in the original.
i game the durable rating on this toy medium, because its mostly cardboard. its durable as most board games are, but no good if you spill a drink on it, and the cards arent laminated.

Every player is trying to collect tokens, that have to be collected in order (#1 first, #2 second, etc.); and each player is especially trying to get to 3 special tokens displayed on a card each player draws at the beginning of the game. Movement happends by moving "street tiles", attempting to make a passageway. Happy chaos can ensue when you are one space away from the token you need - and then the route gets changed by another player. Does require some strategy skills; a fun game for the entire family (kids 8 and older, I would say).

The game is a variant of the original A-Maze-ing Labyrinth game also by Ravensburger. Having played both versions, it's hard to decide which is more enjoyable! There's considerably more set-up involved in this game, but it does also add the concept of value to the treasure cards that are acquired. Now it's not about how much treasure you acquire, but whether you acquire the best treasure and are able to keep it despite the dragon and the guards placed on the board alongside your adventurers.
Since some of the labyrinth is inaccessible due to the dragon's presence, strategy can be a little bit more complicated, and even frustrating. (Especially when trying to access the opposite side of the board from where a player is sitting; the pedestal, etc, blocked all players' view of the side behind it for our group.)
Overall I'd rate the game highly. It's an interesting challenge and could easily be played without the dragon and guards for a faster game experience more or less identical to the original, as well.

Purchased this in 1991 because we loved the original labyrinth game so much. Master Labyrinth takes longer to play if you follow all of the rules. Of course, the rules can be adjusted to meet the needs of the age group. This is a game to pay attention in and your children will learn to think ahead. It's a cause and effect game. While we really like this family game, we're more apt to play the original labyrinth because we were addicted to it first. As always, Ravensburger games are of excellent lasting construction. Ours is still in great condition. Another fun game is Ghost Party which we purchased in 1992, also known in an earlier version as Midnight Party. We play these games with the little ones now and still enjoy them.
